Gave it my best shot!
I was home sleeping in my own bed last night. I pulled out of the AH 135 about 6:30 pm yesterday. It was brutal conditions. Sure I'm sad I couldn't finish the race, but I'm very happy with what I accomplished. I rode 54 miles in sub-zero conditions and had no problems staying warm (except when I stopped). I had problems all day with both disc brakes. I rode 20 or more miles with a brake pad dragging. I stayed well hydrated and ate often. Despite this I couldn't keep the energy level up to continue. When I pulled out at 6:30 it was -14F and dropped to -22F by 8:30. Today I feel like I rode 150 miles yesterday. My entire body aches.
AH135 blog has a report up. It doesn't list me as pulling out. There is a typo. I'm #25. I'll give a full ride report with some picutres later today when this fog in my head clears.

Way to go Doug!! Supreme effort in conditions that I couldn't begin to approach. The "wolves" comment on the Arrowheadblog made me quite worried. Being chased down by a hungry wolf in winter has a macabre tone to it.
Congrats Doug.
Kevin
I ride in temps like that every winter but never for longer the an hour. And certainly never in a situation where if things go bad I can't start banging on doors until I find someone who'll let me come in and warm up.
54 miles is impressive, good job man.
Good job Doug. Way to get out there in such brutal weather. Can't wait to see more pictures
Wow Doug. More than half of the competitors dropped out by the end of the first day. I can't even imagine what it was like out there.
Do you think you'll give it another shot next year? Maybe you could come up to Alaska and race in one of the Iditabike spinoffs. I'm seriously considering the 2008 race to McGrath. You should consider it. It sounds like you're ready.
Nice work. I was thinking of you out there.
Had to have been brutal out there. Great effort!!!!!
Good job Doug! Staying out there for over 10 hours in brutal temps is strong! I can't wait to here more details once you have recovered. I highly recommend lots of pizza for times like this.
The important thing is that you're home with all your fingers and toes and other extremities intact. Rest up and enjoy the great indoors.
Well done Doug, very impressive effort, I cannot wait to read your recap of the day.
Great job Doug... I just barley made it at -8ยบ on my 14 mile commute today. Couldn't imagine any colder. Rest up - looking forward to the full report.
