A new adventure on the Surly Pugsley

It's Saturday and I'm heading out on a new adventure. I'm combining my backpacking skills and cycling ability to do some wilderness camping. I'm getting a late start. I had hoped to be out earlier. I'm heading east into Wisconsin on some ATV trails hoping to reach the Chequamegon National Forest and the Bayfield Pennisula Area. There is an ATV trail between Superior Wisconsin and Ashland Wi that is 60 miles long with other connecting trails. I'm going to explore some of this trail system. I've never done an overnight on a bicycle before. I have wanted to get into bicycle camping for a long time. I've packed for 3 days and two nights. Hard to pack light when you have Celiac Disease and have to carry ALL your own food. Buying along the way isn't really an option if I want to avoid a bad reaction.

Gotta get going!!!

I have a Hennessey Hammock. It's great in warm weather - much more comfortable than a tent. I don't recommend it for cold weather unless you get some sort of external insulation layer for it. I froze my ass off last October because I didn't have the extra insulation layer.

I know, or know of, at least six people over the past 8 years that have owned a HH. It has a lot of pros and cons, which I'm sure you've read about if you've done your homework. I've even considered one for my solo camping. Along the north shore of Lake Superior the woods are thick with very little level ground. When you do find a level spot it is rocky and full of roots. The HH would be ideal, except in the cold weather I often go out in.

The one fact I can't ignore about the HH is that I've never met a long term user. The people I have known get very excited about owning one, think it is the answer to all their tenting issues, use it once or twice, then never use it again. i think that is very telling.
