Studded tires still in demand

No April fool's joke here, it snowed last night. I was serious when I said I wouldn't even consider taking off the studded tires until April 1st. I'm a little tired of riding the studs on dry pavement, but today made it all worth it. I was very glad to have the studs on during this mornings icy, snow covered street commute. We ended up with a couple of inches. Nothing like the 4-8 inches areas to the south of us received. But it was enough to make for very slippery conditions. Eight hours later when I left work there was barely a sign that this snow fall even happened. It had melted and the streets had dried in the sun.

Now I have to decide when the studs come off. It may be another week or two. The average low temperature is still at 26F degrees. But if it remains dry, I may have the studs off in a week or less. Thinking back, it was just three years ago we had a snow day in mid-April. So it can still get bad. I just have to decide when it's no longer worth riding the studded tires in the chance there might be one more isolated snow event.

March wrap-up: The month started out as a really low mileage month for me. At the halfway point I only had 210 miles in. I was really slacking. Yesterday I finished the month with 516 miles and a total for 2008 of 1,651 miles so far. Looking back I realized I have more miles in so far this year than I did at this point the last two. Those two being my highest mileage years ever at 8,500 and 7,500 miles. Amazing to me, because this year I feel like I've been taking it really easy. I guess all the riding I've done has just become part of my lifestyle.

I just made the commitment, changed tires again and put on my crank brothers pedals. Come on summer!
I'll be watching the weather closely, and if we do get more snow, I'll think about the switch again but the next week at least looks all clear... Knock on wood...
