Today we had a perfect morning for the Bike to Work Day here in Duluth, MN. At 7:00 am I met up with two other riders for the 5 mile ride into downtown. The weather was sunny, calm and relatively warm. Temps in the 50's. This is the first time I've taken part in this ride. It's only in it's second year. It seemed to be loosely organized so I wasn't expecting much.

When we reached downtown we stopped at the Minnesota Power Plaza to check out the celebration event. There were a dozen riders hanging around. I ended up spending an hour and 15 minutes there talking to other riders. Odd for me since I usually avoid, at all costs, social situations with people I don't know. I talked to a few people I knew and met several interesting people for the first time.
It's hard to estimate, but I would guess 30-40 riders stopped in at the plaza during the time I was there. It was great to see. When I first started commuting here soon after I moved here in 2001, I wouldn't see that many bicycle commuters during the entire year. The last two summers there has been an explosion of new bicycle commuters locally.

Here is
Jeff arriving at the Plaza.

I rode the Blue Truck/Xtracycle today. It's a great conversation starter. Plus I had an errand to run after work.

Bob's Bike Friday Pocket Rocket. First one I've seen in person, pretty darn cool!!

Another conversation starter. This thing made by Giant was way heavier than my Pugsley.

And Zach's brand new Olive Green Surly Long Haul Trucker. Very nice, if I say so myself. It's the first Olive Green LHT I've seen. Much nicer in person than on the Surly site. Wish I had a LHT....oohh....I do!! However I do wish I had another inch or two in my inseam so I could get one with 700c wheels. It looks more balanced overall with the larger wheels than mine does with the 26 inch wheels.
I may have to make this event an annual commitment for me. I really enjoyed going and meeting other people doing the same thing I am doing.

I had a good ride in with a co-worker. Enjoyable ride from Lakeside. I wish I would have hung around longer, but had to get to work. That Giant is CRAZY- What is that thing? Going to have to do some research!
Thanks to those who put on the Bike to Work Day events!
Jeff
I'm sorry I could'nt make it down town, but I have to start work too early. It was a nice morning to ride to work, but this morning was even nicer! Looks like another rainy week ahead. I'm going shopping for rain gear.
It was a great way to start the morning. Hanging out with other local bike commuters/riders is always a rewarding experience. Dang, that green LHT sure is nice! Great meeting you Doug. We ought to start organizing some laid back group rides for folks who just love riding their bikes, instead of racing them. I would also like to pass on the thanks to those folks who brought the event together. Encouraging to know that I am not alone in my commitment to sustainable transportation, a clean environment, "independence from foreign oil", and just plain enjoying the awesome feeling of riding a bike!
yes, those pesky 26" wheels. me too. my Crosscheck is olive green, and the LHT is puke green. i've thought more than once of selling the Crosscheck frame for a different color, but what's the point? bike works.
i couldn't do the bike-to-work day. i had to help get my older son to school (urban school, no bus service). summer's approaching though.
I enjoyed our BTWD down here earlier in the year. Great to see these events taking off worldwide. I think you need to get local businesses behind it a bit more. We had live music and free breakfasts at my local one!
I'd guess there will be more riders at your next event as more people start riding to work year by year.
I've been lusting after a Pocket Rocket Pro for years now, but I just don't "need" one. I hate being practical.
Zach, I'm all for a laid back group ride. There isn't anything like that locally. I've been looking for people that are interested in a ride like this. Something similar to the Hiawatha Cyclery (Minneapolis) Sat morning rides. No hammering permitted, and where you see more steel frames than carbon fiber or aluminum. I tried to start a Wednesday night group ride last summer through Velduluth. It was for the non-racer type that prefers longer rides with hills. I called it Scenic Routes and Conversation.
