Just enough snow to play on my Pugsley
Yesterday's two inches of snow was barely enough to allow for some REAL snowbiking for a change. But I did get out to see how the riding was. I ended up doing a 22 mile loop all on snow.
It's been such a snow-less winter that today was the first time I've seen a snowmobile out this season.
There really wasn't enough snow for the machines, but there were a few just as eager to get out on their snowmobiles as I've been to get out on my Pugsley.
I had a first today. I've been expecting it. It was the first time in six winters of riding my Pugsley that I crossed paths with another fat tired biker. I've pretty much have had the snowmobile trails to myself (along with the snowmobilers) since I started riding my Pugsley on the trails in 2006. With the explosion of interest in these fat tired bikes I knew the day would come I'd see another rider. I expect to start seeing many more. I hope it doesn't piss off the the snowmobilers too much. Anyway, I knew the rider. It was Salsa sponsored rider Tim Ek. We are both year round bike commuters and our paths seem to cross at least once a week for the past.....forever....maybe six or seven years. Since we see each other in the mornings and we are on our way to work, we never get a chance to chat. So it was cool to stop and talk a few minutes with Tim. He was sporting his new Salsa Mukluk fat bike. I didn't get a photo.
It was really great to be out on snow for a change. But the conditions were far from ideal. There is a lot of ice under that two inches of snow. It's not like the packed, groomed trails I'm used to riding this time of year. For any locals like Tim that are rocking new fat tire bike, just be patient, the riding is so much better during a normal winter.
It doesn't really show up in these pictures, but there were light snow flurries falling during my entire ride. I love riding when it's snowing. So that was a plus.

Here's hoping we'll still get winter yet. Since I've had the Pugsley I've had at least two winters I rode good snow well into April. Two different years, including last year, we got an early thaw in mid-February and the trails never came back after that. Each year is different.
Share the joy.

We've basically been in a thaw-freeze cycle, reminiscent of early spring, all winter. Not ideal for the Pugsley for sure...I've had a few wipeouts on mine. Still there is some decent snowbiking in the TC along the rivers. Always see Fat Bikes after a snowfall. Snowmobiles are for wussies ;-)
Glad to see you out on that snow! I rode the Pugs yesterday too; on gravel.
